There’s an old story of a man who was walking at night, and saw another man searching for something near a lamp post. Approaching, he asked the man what he was looking for, and the man, without looking up, replied, “My watch.” The first man asked, “Well, prec … More

Lampstand

A seven-branched candlestick of pure gold provided the only light within the tent itself, just as Jesus is the light of the world (John 8:12) (vv. 31-32). This golden lampstand was the most beautiful piece of furniture in the tabernacle. Its decorative flower-like cups, buds and blossoms were formed from one solid piece of gold. These seven lights were not made by candles, but instead seven wicks burned pure olive oil, representing the Holy Spirit, and drawn from a common reservoir (Lev. 24:1-4).You remember that Jesus said, “I am the light of the world.” So this speaks of Jesus too.

On each side of an upright shaft were three branches extending upward (v. 32). Each branch had three almond flower-shaped cups (v. 33), and the center shaft had four such cups (v. 34). At the top of the center shaft and each of the six branches was a lamp (v. 37). The seven lamps in the lampstand  provided light in the tent (v. 37). The lampstand, which was to burn continually, and was serviced by the priests in the morning, and at sunset (27:20-21). The amount of gold required for this piece of furniture and its accessories was a talent, which was about 75 pounds. As this lampstand provided light for the priestly functions before God, so Christ today is the Light of the world (John 8:12).

The other piece of furniture was called the altar of incense. It too was made of gold. Here they burned spices to make a sweet-smelling perfume. This was always kept burning, and sweet perfume rose up to heaven. This makes us think of Jesus too, for He is always caring for us. In Heaven now He is praying for us.

Application

Just as the Lampstand light up the whole tent I would pray that my life might light up the world.

Exodus 25:31-40 (English Standard Version)

"You shall make a lampstand of pure gold. The lampstand shall be made of hammered work: its base, its stem, its cups, its calyxes, and its flowers shall be of one piece with it. And there shall be six branches going out of its sides, three branches of the lampstand out of one side of it and three branches of the lampstand out of the other side of it; three cups made like almond blossoms, each with calyx and flower, on one branch, and three cups made like almond blossoms, each with calyx and flower, on the other branch--so for the six branches going out of the lampstand. And on the lampstand itself there shall be four cups made like almond blossoms, with their calyxes and flowers, and a calyx of one piece with it under each pair of the six branches going out from the lampstand. Their calyxes and their branches shall be of one piece with it, the whole of it a single piece of hammered work of pure gold. You shall make seven lamps for it. And the lamps shall be set up so as to give light on the space in front of it. Its tongs and their trays shall be of pure gold. It shall be made, with all these utensils, out of a talent of pure gold. And see that you make them after the pattern for them, which is being shown you on the mountain."
