In ancient Rome, crowds by the tens of thousands would gather in the Coliseum to watch as Christians were torn apart by wild animals. Paul Rader, commenting on his visit to this famous landmark, said, “I stood uncovered to the heavens above, and asked myself, ‘Wo … More
Paul turned from the false teachers to remind Timothy to follow those who are true (vv. 10-15). He talks about their past relationship but now that relationship will soon be terminated and Timothy will need to stand alone. It is important in these difficult days that we listen to the right spiritual leaders. No matter how appealing a preacher may be, if he does not preach the truth of God’s Word or his manner of life does not back up his messages he does not deserve our support. Some people today have the idea that godliness means escaping persecution, when just the opposite is true. Paul follows this explanation for such suffering (vv. 12-13). The persecutions of the godly by the world may vary in degree and take different forms in different countries, but the basic hostility of the world toward the godly is the same.
Timothy’s grandmother and mother had faithfully taught him the Old Testament Scriptures (vv. 14-15). God says that His Word offers us four eternally beneficial guideposts (vv. 16-17):
Application
I must stick with a plan to read, meditate, study and apply the Word of God everyday of my life. I am only kidding myself if I think I can operate on what I have learned in earlier years.
II Timothy 3:10-17 (English Standard Version)
You, however, have followed my teaching, my conduct, my aim in life, my faith, my patience, my love, my steadfastness, my persecutions and sufferings that happened to me at Antioch, at Iconium, and at Lystra-- which persecutions I endured; yet from them all the Lord rescued me. Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, while evil people and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.
