Stephen Olford tells of a Baptist Minister during the American Revolution named Peter Miller, who lived in Pennsylvania and was friends with George Washington. But Miller had a bitter enemy named Michael Whitman, who did all that he could to frustrate and humiliate the good … More
In this passage the Lord assures Israel of His love by comparing Himself to a compassionate mother (vv 14-23). Isaiah pictures Israel as a nursing child totally dependent on the Lord who will never forget them or forsake them. The high priest had the names of the tribes of Israel engraved on jewels; but God had His children’s names engraved on His hands. This indicates that God’s relationship with Israel is such that He cannot be separated from them. He can never forget Zion or Zion’s children.
The Babylonians were fierce warriors (vv 24-26) but they were no match for the Lord. The fact that He permitted Babylon to conquer His people did not mean that God was weak or unconcerned. In His compassion for Israel, He would set the captives free and see to it that Babylon would never afflict them again. The meaning seems to be that the enemies of Israel will simply destroy themselves. This has certainly been the case of the nations in that part of the world throughout their history. When the Gentile leaders have to become subservient to Israel it will cause her to realize that the Lord is really in control of this world (v. 23). In the end, Israel’s enemies will be destroyed which will cause the whole world to acknowledge that the Lord is Israel’s God. Never should we doubt that God will fulfill His promises. He will even do the impossible to make them come true.Application
God proved to Israel that He would do the impossible by causing warriors to set their captives free. I should never doubt that God delights in fulfilling His promises to me and He will even do the impossible to bring them to pass.
Isaiah 49:14-26 (English Standard Version)
But Zion said, "The LORD has forsaken me; my Lord has forgotten me." "Can a woman forget her nursing child, that she should have no compassion on the son of her womb? Even these may forget, yet I will not forget you. Behold, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are continually before me. Your builders make haste; your destroyers and those who laid you waste go out from you. Lift up your eyes around and see; they all gather, they come to you. As I live, declares the LORD, you shall put them all on as an ornament; you shall bind them on as a bride does. "Surely your waste and your desolate places and your devastated land-- surely now you will be too narrow for your inhabitants, and those who swallowed you up will be far away. The children of your bereavement will yet say in your ears: 'The place is too narrow for me; make room for me to dwell in.' Then you will say in your heart: 'Who has borne me these? I was bereaved and barren, exiled and put away, but who has brought up these? Behold, I was left alone; from where have these come?'" Thus says the Lord GOD: "Behold, I will lift up my hand to the nations, and raise my signal to the peoples; and they shall bring your sons in their bosom, and your daughters shall be carried on their shoulders. Kings shall be your foster fathers, and their queens your nursing mothers. With their faces to the ground they shall bow down to you, and lick the dust of your feet. Then you will know that I am the LORD; those who wait for me shall not be put to shame." Can the prey be taken from the mighty, or the captives of a tyrant be rescued? For thus says the LORD: "Even the captives of the mighty shall be taken, and the prey of the tyrant be rescued, for I will contend with those who contend with you, and I will save your children. I will make your oppressors eat their own flesh, and they shall be drunk with their own blood as with wine. Then all flesh shall know that I am the LORD your Savior, and your Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob."
