Experience Heaven’s Glory in the Midst of Suffering
I Peter 1:9–12
» View this passage in NIV (Bible Gateway)
Have you ever lived with a roommate that puts you down? Let’s say you’re a crummy student and you get a Phi Beta Kappa as a roommate. Now that’s rather threatening, isn’t it? And let’s say you are not disciplined, but your roommate has discipline as his middle name. Let’s say … More
Charles Spurgeon used to say, “Little faith will take your soul to heaven, but great faith will bring heaven to your soul.” In other words anyone can long for heaven when they are going through times of suffering. What Peter urged his readers to do was to apply love, faith and rejoicing so they could experience some of heaven’s glory now in the midst of suffering. As we obey Him and experience trials, we are being prepared for glory.
Both suffering and glory were foretold and it has been written that glory cannot be experienced apart from suffering (Luke 18:31-33). The Jews of that day truly knew what it was to suffer. They were misunderstood and many people thought of them as anti-government and anti-society. One must have an understanding of this fact in order to fully understand I Peter. Peter’s readers needed encouragement and they needed to be reminded of the basic certainties of God’s promises. The same is true today. In times of trial we can turn to the Bible and find all that we need for encouragement and strength.
Angels have an interest in the work of God among men on the earth even though they have no part in the plan of salvation (v. 12). In Luke 15:10 we find that the angels rejoice when a sinner repents. This is only accomplished as we allow the Holy Spirit to control our thoughts and actions.
Application
What have the angels learned recently from my actions? Are they rejoicing over the things I am allowing the Holy Spirit to control?
I Peter 1:9-12 (English Standard Version)
Obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls. Concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied about the grace that was to be yours searched and inquired carefully, inquiring what person or time the Spirit of Christ in them was indicating when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the subsequent glories. It was revealed to them that they were serving not themselves but you, in the things that have now been announced to you through those who preached the good news to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven, things into which angels long to look.
