A young woman named Anne Steele had encountered one trial and disappointment after another. Being a devout Christian, she continuously sought to praise God even in sorrow. She was engaged to be married, and had looked forward to her wedding day with eagerness. The big day finally … More

Thankfulness

In this passage the psalmist is realizing how much he owes to God. In it he expresses his:

  1. Goals (vv. 12-15).
    1. He states his thoughts about life in the future as it pertains to duty “What shall I render unto the Lord for all His benefits toward me,” (vv. 12-14)
    2. He makes a statement as it pertains to death. “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints (v. 15). It is of great value to Him because of the death of His Son.
  2. Gladness (vv. 16-19).
    1. In closing he expresses gladness for his position “I am thy servant” (v. 16).
    2. And for his promise “I will pay my vows unto the Lord” (v. 18).

Not only is Psalm 117 the shortest chapter in the Bible, it is also the middle chapter. Paul quotes from this psalm in Romans 15:11 to show that God’s salvation is for all people, not just the Jews. Have you ever said, I can’t think of anything God has done for me. How can I praise Him?

Application

Psalm 117 give two reasons for praising God (v. 2): (1) His great love toward me and (2) His faithfulness that endures forever. Regardless of circumstances I want to praise the Lord.

Psalms 116:12-2 (English Standard Version)
