God’s Word is Awesome

Email this commentaryPrint this commentary

I once read about a converted rabbi sitting next to an atheist on an airplane. Every few minutes, one of the rabbi’s children or grandchildren would inquire about his needs for food, drink, or comfort. The atheist commented, “The respect your children and grandchildren show … More

Respect

The psalmist hated double-mindedness and hoped in God’s Word because God was his refuge.

  1. Five ways to show respect for God’s Word (vv. 113-117).
    1. Whole-Hearted commitment to God’s Word (v. 113).
      1. “I hate vain (undecided) thoughts...”
      2. “...but Thy law do I love”
    2. Patient in relying on God’s Word for victory (v. 114).
      1. “Thou art my hiding place...” - So attackers can’t find you.
      2. “...and my shield:” - To hold off attacks of the enemy.
      3. “I hope in Thy Word.” - Never losing confidence.
    3. Reject the influence of bad companions (v. 115). “Depart from me, ye evil doers;”
    4. Count on God’s Word to never let you down (v. 116). “Uphold me according to Thy Word..”
    5. Cling to God for safety and protection (v. 117). “Hold thou me up, and I shall be safe:”
  2. Two ways to show respect for God’s judgements (vv. 118-120).
    1. Appreciate God’s judgement of the wicked.
      1. Reject them - “Thou hast trodden down all them that err from Thy statutes” (v. 118).
      2. Remove them - “Thou puttest away all the wicked of the earth like dross” (v. 119).
    2. Fear God’s judgment - “My flesh trembleth for fear of Thee; and I am afraid” (v. 20).

Application

Lord, help me to show respect for Your Word and Your judgments in the ways listed above.

Psalms 119:113-120 (English Standard Version)

I hate the double-minded, but I love your law. You are my hiding place and my shield; I hope in your word. Depart from me, you evildoers, that I may keep the commandments of my God. Uphold me according to your promise, that I may live, and let me not be put to shame in my hope! Hold me up, that I may be safe and have regard for your statutes continually! You spurn all who go astray from your statutes, for their cunning is in vain. All the wicked of the earth you discard like dross, therefore I love your testimonies. My flesh trembles for fear of you, and I am afraid of your judgments.
