The Idols of The Nations Are The Work of Mens Hands

Email this commentaryPrint this commentary

It is said that the Rev. John Thomas, a missionary in India, was one day traveling through the country when he saw a group of people waiting to enter an idol temple. As soon as the doors were opened and they started inside he walked to the front and stood in front of the idol. He … More

Idols

The purpose of this passage is:

  1. To arm the people of God against idolatry and all false worship (vv. 15-18). This is done by showing what sort of gods they were that the heathen worshiped. These images were the work of men’s hands, and the creatures of men’s fancy and imagination. They had the shape of animals, but they could neither see, nor hear, nor speak, nor so much as breathe; and therefore to make them with eyes, and ears, and mouths, and nostrils, was just a joke. Their worshipers were therefore as stupid and senseless as they were (v. 18).
  2. To stir up the people of God to true devotion in the worship of the true God (vv. 19-21). The more deplorable the condition of the Gentile nations that worship idols is the more we are obligated  to thank God that we know better. Therefore, let us bless the Lord, and again and again, bless the Lord.

How many today are like idol images when they have eyes, ears, and mouths but act like they had none and do not use them for God`s glory. This psalm concludes with the fact that we are not only to bless God but we are to praise Him. We bless Him for what He is to us and we praise Him for what He is to Himself.

Application

It is so easy to have idol worship in my life and not realize it. I want to make sure that I never allow a person, place or thing take place of my worship of the true and living God.

Psalms 135:15-21 (English Standard Version)

The idols of the nations are silver and gold, the work of human hands. They have mouths, but do not speak; they have eyes, but do not see; they have ears, but do not hear, nor is there any breath in their mouths. Those who make them become like them, so do all who trust in them! O house of Israel, bless the LORD! O house of Aaron, bless the LORD! O house of Levi, bless the LORD! You who fear the LORD, bless the LORD! Blessed be the LORD from Zion, he who dwells in Jerusalem! Praise the LORD!
