In her book “Only One Year,” Stalin’s daughter, Svetlana Alliluyeva, recounts the experiences that led her from the emptiness of atheism in Russia to faith and freedom in America. In the spring of her thirty-fifth year, Svetlana began to be aware of God’s presence. Happ … More

Praise

Again we find David crying out for deliverance. He always knew where to turn when his troubles overwhelmed him, he turned to God. In these four verses we find him taking comfort in the following thoughts:

  1. God is mighty (v. 14). It seems that David was writing this during Absalom’s rebellion against him. If so David’s counsels had gone over to the other side and it was as if everyone was against him. Yet, no matter how strong and numerous his adversaries were he still had confidence that with God he was on the side of the majority.
  2. God is magnified (vv. 15-16). Our tendency is to scale God down to our size and make Him just a little bigger than we are. We need to think of Him in all of His greatness. As creator just think of Him as the one who made the largest mountain and also the smallest grain of sand. He was the one who put the sun and the stars in space and yet he even counts the hairs on our head. His works in creation and redemption will bear the closest scrutiny. The more we study them the more amazed and astonished we will become. David was one who magnified God and praised Him. We should do the same.
  3. God is merciful (v.17). In our society people are always crying out for justice when we should be crying out to God for mercy. Just think of what we would get for all of the babies being murdered today if we got justice.

Application

I need to just sit for a few moments and think on the greatness of God and who He is. Praise Him for how great He is and how much He means to me.

Psalms 40:14-17 (English Standard Version)

Let those be put to shame and disappointed altogether who seek to snatch away my life; let those be turned back and brought to dishonor who delight in my hurt! Let those be appalled because of their shame who say to me, "Aha, Aha!" But may all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you; may those who love your salvation say continually, "Great is the LORD!" As for me, I am poor and needy, but the Lord takes thought for me. You are my help and my deliverer; do not delay, O my God!
