Once upon a time some mice gathered to decide upon the best means of ridding themselves of the cat who had killed many of their friends and relatives. Various plans were discussed and rejected, until, at last, a young mouse came forward proposing that a bell should be hung around … More
John closes out the Word of God with a three-fold invitation to the unsaved (v. 17). (1) The Spirit says come, (2) The bride says come, (3) And we who have heard must say come.
The message of the Bible is complete and needs no additions from anyone. In fact solemn words of warning are given to:
These are solemn warnings against tampering in any way with the prophecies of this book of Revelation. It seems this (v. 19) can refer only to the lake of fire, for all who are not written in the book of life are cast into that place.
As a closing benediction the Lord says that He will come quickly. John’s reply is “Come, Lord Jesus.”
Application
There are many cults and religious groups today who are both adding and subtracting to the Word of God. It is a very serious responsibility that I have to teach or preach the Word of God and to never add to it or subtract from it. The results may be very serious.
Revelation 22:17-21 (English Standard Version)
The Spirit and the Bride say, "Come." And let the one who hears say, "Come." And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who desires take the water of life without price. I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book, and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are described in this book. He who testifies to these things says, "Surely I am coming soon." Amen. Come, Lord Jesus! The grace of the Lord Jesus be with all. Amen.
