Creation (Land, Plants, Sun, Moon, Stars)

What if? If the earth were as small as the moon, the power of gravity would be too weak to retain sufficient atmosphere for man’s needs; but if it were as large as Jupiter, Saturn, or Uranus, extreme gravitation would make human movement almost impossible. If we were as nea … More

Earth

Dry land with its vegetation was formed the third day(vv. 9-13). God gathered all the water on the earth together in certain places to form lakes, seas and oceans. Then dry land appeared which would be the plains, valleys and hills. When God saw this what did He think of it? “God saw that it was good” (v. 10). Then God commanded and the earth was covered with growing things - grass, fruit, trees, and grain. These verses alone totally refute the doctrine of theistic evolution which says life began aeons ago from a glob of scum. However, many humans repeatedly reject the Creator to worship the Creation (Rom. 1:25).

The fourth day of creation included the sun to govern the day and the moon and stars to rule the night (vv. 14-19). God put them in the sky to give light to the earth, to dominate the day and the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. God saw that it was good. In Psalm 19:1 the Bible says the stars and planets were to display the handiwork of God. The threefold purpose of placing the light in the firmament was:

1.  To divide the day from the night

2.  For signs

3.  For seasons

In astrology unbelievers use stars and planets for guidance, but the Bible says they merely display the handiwork of God.

Application

God’s greatest work was done when He sent His Son to take the punishment for my sins so that I could have my sins forgiven. I can obey Him only as I give myself to Him.
