Forgiveness

Solomon looks ahead (vv. 22-31) and asks God to help His people in various trials of life. He petitioned for his own needs back in chapter 1. Now he shows great concern for his people. The heart of the pastor is taken up with the needs of his flock. Genuine revival begins by asking for forgiveness. As Solomon continues to pray as a spokesman to God for the children of Israel, he asks for forgiveness: (1) for sins in interpersonal relationships (vv. 22-23), (2) for sins that had caused defeat in battle (vv.24-25), (3) for sins that had brought on drought (vv. 26-28), & (4) for sins that had resulted in other calamites (vv. 29-31) (famine, plague, blight, mildew, locust, grasshoppers, enemies, disaster, & disease). We can learn from this prayer that sin always leads to captivity while repentance leads to restoration. It is God and God alone who knows the heart motives of people. The result of such a prayer for forgiveness is to fear Him and walk in His ways.

Solomon looked around (vv. 32-35) as he called on God to hear the prayer of believing foreigners. By hearing them, God’s fame would spread worldwide. He asked God to give his people victory in battle. He says, “Answer their prayers from heaven and give them victory.” The King seemed to have insight into the fate of God’s people. They would soon go into captivity because of their sins against God; they called on Him for forgiveness, and they experienced restoration to their land. Sin always leads to captivity while repentance leads to restoration. Most are sorry they got caught but very few are willing to really repent.

Solomon looked within (vv. 36-42) as he pleads with God for forgiveness and to bless all present. God has chosen to respond to His children who pray within His conditions. He changes people and sometimes changes things. He closes his prayer by asking God to always remember the love He had for his servant David and not reject His chosen Kings (v. 42).

Application

If I want to experience revival in my own heart, I need to begin by asking God for forgiveness. Then I need to ask anyone I have offended for forgiveness. This is the starting point for revival.
