Justice

Peter gives three historic examples of God’s judgement of sin:

  1. The fallen angles in verse 4. (Gen. 6:1-4)
  2. The ungodly people of Noah’s day in verse 5. (Gen. 7)
  3. The ungodly people at Sodom and Gomorrah in verse 6. (Gen. 19).

We see an explanation of Divine deliverance (vv. 7-9). In light of Genesis 19 it may seem very strange that Lot is used as an example of righteousness. Perhaps it was because he was righteous in contrast to the totally wicked population in these twin cities. It is a fact that seeing and hearing their vile ways day after day Lot was grieved to the point of inner torture. (v. 7).Just as God rescued Lot from Sodom, so he is able to rescue us from the temptations and trials we face in this wicked world. Lot was not sinless, but he put his trust in God and was spared when Sodom was destroyed. God will judge those who cause the temptations and trials, so we don’t need to worry about justice being done in the day which we live.

Application

I am glad that I serve a God who is just. I have never reached a state of sinless perfection but my Lord is just and forgiving because He loves me and is my Savior.
