In the early days of our ministry with Word of Life I organized an evangelistic Jack Wyrtzen rally near where we lived. At that event Jim and his entire family came forward to accept Christ as their saviour. Jim had 5 teenagers and had a great desire for them to grow spiritually. … More
This chapter records the first battle in the Bible as well as the first in all of recorded history. First the conditions are described (vv. 1-2).. It takes place between four powerful kings of the East and five Jordanian kings. This battle focuses at a point that intersects a main caravan route running east from the Mediterranean to Mesopotamia and a well-used highway that ran to Sodom and Gomorrah.
Next the conflict is described (vv. 3-9). The eastern coalition seems to have been a powerful one. The news of this coalition of Kings from the East had no doubt reached the cities of the plain. In great alarm they formed a mutual pact and fortified their outpost. It seems that there was no thought of God, no repentance, no prayer-only the formation of alliances and the outfitting of armies.
Contrary to all expectations, the defenses of the cities of the plain collapsed, and those lucky enough to survive the battle were soon in full flight (vv. 10-11). Included in this group was Lot, Abraham’s brother’s son, who dwelt in Sodom (v. 12). During this time, Abraham was where God wanted him to be, dwelling in Hebron. He was a separated but not a secluded believer. No doubt Abraham was paying careful attention to the news. He hated all Sodom stood for, but he did not for one moment pretend that Sodom did not exist. He certainly was concerned about his nephew Lot.
Application
Sin is a stench in the nostrils of God, and I can be sure that He will bring judgment to me if I participate. As a country, I believe the United States of America is headed for God’s judgment.
