Nineveh Was Impressive Outside But Deceitful Inside

William Carey is considered the father of modern missions. He spent his early years as a cobbler and became one of the greatest linguists the church has ever known. It’s reported that Carey translated parts of the Bible into as many as 24 Indian languages. When he first went to … More

Humiliation

The Assyrians were noted for their ruthlessness and shameful atrocities against other nations. She was known for robbing and ravaging her neighbors. The Assyrian kings boasted of their cruelty in order to instill terror in their enemies. In spite of Nineveh’s great power and position, God would soon expose her as a harlot, and make her as a gazing-stock for the nation to see. Her efforts at defense will be futile. God was against her and is against every nation, no matter how wealthy, powerful or self-sufficient it may be, when it disregards divine authority and tramples on human life.

The prophet declares that Nineveh’s fate is as certain at that of No-Amono, which was the Egyptian city of Thebes, which Assyria had conquered in 663 B.C. When Assyria invaded Thebes she was subdued and her children were slaughtered, her leaders humiliated and bound in chains. Nineveh’s treatment of Thebes would be turned back on her. Nahum said Nineveh, who oppressed others will find no comforters in her hour of distress, but will be forsaken and left to her fate. The buildings will be consumed by fire, and the inhabitants slain with the sword. God declared that He will make her grave and bury her so completely that even her location would be obliterated from history.

Beautiful and impressive on the outside Nineveh was vicious and deceitful on the inside. Beneath beautiful facades sometimes lie seduction and death. We must never let an attractive institution, company, movement or person seduce us into lowering our standards or compromise our principles.

Application

I must never compromise. God is never deceived. He knew Nineveh’s sin and he knows mine. It is important that I do not think that I am more than I am and claim I John 1:9 whenever I sin.
