The feast of tabernacles

Tony Evans says, “If you limit worship to where you are, the minute you leave that place of worship you will leave your attitude of worship behind like a crumpled-up church bulletin.” (Tony Evans). … More

Worship

Types of offerings continued:

  1. Feast of Trumpets - first day of the 7th month - 1 bull, 1 ram, 7 lambs, 1 goat (vv. 1-6).
  2. Day of Atonement - 10th day of 7th month - 1 bull, 1 ram, 7 lambs, 1 goat (vv. 7-11).
  3. Feast of Booths - 15th to 22nd days of 7th month - priest offered over 200 sacrifices (vv. 12-39)

As believers today, we can learn the following practical lessons from these offerings:

  1. All of them are fulfilled in Jesus Christ (Heb. 10:1-18). The blood of animals can never take away sin (vv. 1-4), but the blood of Christ cleanses us from all sin (I John 1:7).
  2. The nation could not have functioned without the ministry of the priests. They represented the people before God and offered the sacrifices that He required; but today, Jesus Christ is the believer’s high priest in heaven.
  3. These sacrifices were very expensive. The people gave God something of value by sacrificing animals. If God’s people who were under the law could do this, how much more should we give, we who have experienced the grace of God. The best gift, of course is ourselves.
  4. The people gathered together to celebrate and worship. There is an extra benefit and blessing to be gained from worshiping with other believers (Heb. 10:25).

The normal daily routine was suspended during this time and no hard work was done. It takes time to worship, and setting aside time before worship allows attitudes to be corrected; after worship allows for reflection.

Application

We hear a lot today about “praise and worship.” Much of the emphasis seems to me to be on the type of music you sing, the repetition of the words, and the movements you make (such as raising your hands, etc). I need to keep in mind that it is not so much what happens on the outside, as what takes place on the inside that is important. Then, I need to honestly evaluate the effect it makes on my daily life as a result of this time spent with Him.
