Dr. John Geddie went to Aneityum in 1848 and worked there for God for 24 years. On the tablet erected to his memory these words are inscribed: When he landed, in 1848, there were no Christians. When he left, in 1872, there were no heathen. (Spiritual Leadership, J. O. Sande … More
In this chapter we are exhorted to have a continual regard for God’s influence in every area of this life. The writer advises the builders not to worry, certainly not to become “workaholics to the glory of God!” God has intended that man should work by day and sleep peacefully by night."It is vain for us to rise up early and sit up late, and thus deny ourselves our bodily refreshments, in the eager pursuit of the wealth of the world’’ (v. 2). Usually, those that rise early do not care for sitting up late, nor can those that sit up late easily persuade themselves to rise early; but some are so eager to get ahead in this world that they will do both, and thus will rob their sleep to pay for their cares. An example is someone who might try to build a Godly home without God’s Word. It is useless to try.
Children are a heritage for the Lord s(v. 3). They are my children (says God) which thou hast borne unto me (Ez. 16:20); and they bring most honor and comfort to us when they are made accountable to Him. As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man (v. 4), who knows how to use them for his own safety and advantage, so are children born to their parents when they are young, and are grown up to serve them by the time they need their service. The family that has a large stock of children is like a quiver full of arrows, of different sizes, but all of use one time or other (v. 5). They are children of different capacities and inclinations and may be serviceable to the family in many ways. Remember our children watch what we as adults do. They are like arrows in our hand and will go in the direction we point them. The more Godly children we raise the more influence we can have in our world.
I need to evaluate how strong God’s influence is in our family. Are there areas in which I have not let “the Lord build the house”. Have other things taken God’s place in the priority of our home? Are there any influences in our family that is hindering the Lord’s work in our home? What could I do to strengthen our family in the Lord (like a family night together)?
Unless the LORD builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain. It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil; for he gives to his beloved sleep. Behold, children are a heritage from the LORD, the fruit of the womb a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of one's youth. Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them! He shall not be put to shame when he speaks with his enemies in the gate.
