Trust in The Lord

Humility

Charles Spurgeon said that this Psalm is “one of the shortest to read, but one of the longest to learn.” This is a psalm of humility. it records the meek and humble spirit of David. Pride is centered in the heart, but it is not clearly revealed in the eyes. Remember a proud look is one of the things God hates. He speaks of his soul as a weaned child. We are weaned from worldly things to heavenly things. It’s always tricky to talk about humility. How do you know when you’re truly humble? If you are truly humble, will you even know it? When you think you have it, you’ve lost it.

In this very brief psalm we find a beautiful short meditation going to the very heart of a person who  is completely relying upon the God of love. It is so brief that only too easily it can be passed over unnoticed. Evidently it was repeated by someone “going up” to worship in Jerusalem. It is possible  that what he is thinking aloud to God could have represented the thoughts of David, the man who was forgiven for his great sinfulness. But, of course, so are we today forgiven for our great sinfulness. It seems that this is what is passing through his mind: Lord, there have been times when I rebelled against the mystery of life. At those times the belief I found in the Torah that you are love just did not fit. With the pain and sorrow that is everywhere in the world. I could not see how your suffering love could overcome the brutality of evil and turn its force into creative energy. I am not much of a theologian, so I do not occupy myself with things too great and marvelous for me. (We recall at this point that marvelous is a word meaning specifically what is beyond human understanding because it reveals the mystery of divine love.)

Application

What are some of the things that I feel I have a right to, and it upsets me if they are denied to me or taken over by someone else"? Regardless of what they are I need to be willing to turn them over to the Lord.
