David Gives 8 Reasons to Bless God

Death

There is debate as to whether David is asking for deliverance from death or deliverance out of death by the resurrection. There is certainly much more to be understood as David gives eight reasons to bless God as he faces death:

      1.   God is my protector - “Preserve me” (v. 1).

      2.   God is my goodness - “My goodness is nothing apart from You” (v 2). We have taken a giant step toward true Christian maturity when we can say this to the Lord and mean it.

      3.   God is my delight - “As for the saints...., in whom is all my delight” (v. 3-4).

      4.   God is my inheritance - “You are the portion of my inheritance” (v. 5). “I have a good inheritance” (v. 6).

      5.   God is my counselor “I will bless the Lord who has given me counsel” (v. 7).

      6.   God is my rock - “I shall not be moved” (vv. 8-9).

      7.   God is my resurrection - “You will not leave my soul in Sheol” (v. 10).

            (a)  God won’t allow the body and the spirit to remain separated in death.

            (b) The body won’t see corruption before this occurs.

      8.   God is my life - “path of life,” “fulness of joy,” and “pleasures forevermore (v. 11).

Many people fear death because they can neither control nor understand it. As believers we can be assured that God will not forget us when we die. He will bring us to life again to live with Him forever.

Application

I should never fear death (II Corinthians 5:8). Christ conquered death and rose so that I may be the first fruits (I Corinthians 15:20), resurrected in my body. My confidence can be steadfast and sure in my Savior the Lord Jesus Christ. In 1954 (while on a troop ship in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean) a navy Chaplin explained to me how we are all sinners and that Christ (God’s only Son) died on a cross some 2000 years ago for my sin. All I had to do was repent, believe and receive Him, which I did, and now I’m as sure of heaven as if I was already there.
