The Duke of Wellington, the British military leader who defeated Napoleon at Waterloo, was not an easy man to serve under. He was brilliant, demanding, and not one to shower his subordinates with compliments. Yet even Wellington realized that his methods left something to be desi … More
This hymn stresses the reasons for the believer’s adoration of God. It is a hymn of praise. It may have resulted from a national victory, but there is no hint within its text to reveal which victory. The psalmist calls on the righteous to praise the Lord because His Word is dependable and His work is righteous (v. 1). Music is a very important aspect of praising the Lord. David, who wrote this Psalm was an accomplished harpist (I Sam. 16:15-23). He undoubtedly composed music for many of the Psalms. We are to use all of the musical skills that we have to bring forth praises to our God (vv. 2-3). Certainly God is not displeased with instrumental music in our meetings as some religious groups would have us to believe.
The world today has lost its standards of morality as taught in His Word. We live in a permissive society that has no absolute standards of right and wrong. Everybody does his own thing. Children come into our public schools today without any teaching of right and wrong. As a result they are easy prey for the dope pusher, alcoholism and all types of sexual experimentation.
God has provided standards that are absolute in His Word. “For the Word of the Lord is right; and all of His works are done in truth. He loveth righteousness and judgment.” (vv. 4-5). People who disregard and disobey these standards will come crashing down. God is to be praised not only for His personal goodness, but for the greatness of His creation (vv. 6-7). Men must forsake his idols and worship only the living God (v. 8). His purposes will be fulfilled no matter what people attempt to do (vv. 9-11).
Application
It is very important that I teach the standards from God’s Word to my children. Their values of right and wrong must be based on the principles of God’s Word that I have taught them?
