Forgiveness

The order of the offerings is very significant. This fourth and fifth offering comes only after the first three, which have dealt, as we have seen, with the basic needs of men for love (the burnt offering), joy (the meal offering, representing the response to love), and peace (the peace offering). Love, joy, and peace. Only after these does God begin to talk about sin and trespass

The Lord told Moses what the people must do to make things right when they find out they have cheated the Lord (vv. 14-15). They must either sacrifice a ram that has nothing wrong with it or else pay the price of a ram with the official money used by the priests. In addition, they must pay what they owe plus a fine of twenty percent (v. 16). Then the priest will offer the ram as a sacrifice, and they will be forgiven.

If they break any of my commands without meaning to, they are still guilty, and they can be punished (vv 17-19). When they realize what they have done, they must either bring to the priest a ram that is perfect or else pay him for one. The priest will offer it as a sacrifice to make things right, and they will be forgiven.

Application

I am so thankful for I John 1:9 that says “If I confess my sin He will forgive me and cleanse me.”
