Death

Nadab and Abihu, two of Aaron’s sons disobeyed the Lord by burning incense on a fire pan (v. 1). Suddenly the Lord burned them to death(v. 2). Then Moses told Aaron that this was exactly what the Lord had meant when he said: “I demand respect from my priests (v. 3).” Aaron was speechless. Moses sent for Michael and Elzaphan, the two sons of Aaron’s uncle Uzziel (v. 4). He told them, “Take these two dead relatives of yours outside the camp.” So they dragged the dead men away (v. 5). Then Moses told Aaron and his other two sons, Eleazar and Ithamar (v. 6): don’t show your sorrow or the Lord will get angry and kill you (v. 7).

The Lord said to Aaron (v. 8): When you or your sons enter the sacred tent, you must never drink beer or wine. This law will never change (v. 9). You must learn the difference between what is holy and what isn’t (v. 10). You must also teach the people of Israel everything that I commanded Moses to say to them (v. 11). Moses told Aaron and his two sons, Eleazar and Ithamar (v. 12). The grain sacrifice is very holy. So make bread without yeast and you and your sons eat it beside the altar (v. 13). But the ribs and hind leg may be eaten by your entire family, as long as you do so in an acceptable place (vv. (14-15).

When Moses learned that the ram had already been burned on the altar, he became angry with Eleazar and Ithamar (v. 16) and said, “Why didn’t you eat the meat from this sacrifice in an acceptable place (v. 17? Whenever an animal’s blood isn’t brought into the sacred tent, I commanded you to eat its meat in an acceptable place, but you burned it instead (v. 18).” Their father Aaron replied, “Today two of my sons offered the sacrifice for sin and the sacrifice to please the Lord, and look what has happened (vv. 19-20)!
