Young Men Are to Be Good Examples

A story is told of a father who spent time every day in the tavern. However, he was always warning his son never to drink. Then one snowy day on the way to the tavern the father turned around and saw his son carefully placing his steps in the foot prints of his father. It is said … More

Thus far the apostle has described the misery of a natural state in these verses, which we shall find him pursuing again in some following ones. Here the apostle begins his account of the glorious change that was wrought in them by converting grace.

Paul urges the younger men to be self-restrained and to have self control in every area of their life (v. 6). He says to always set a good example for others and show your own self in all respects to be a pattern and a model of good deeds and work, having the strictest regard for truth and purity of motive, with dignity and seriousness (v. 7). Be sincere and serious when you teach. Use clean language that no one can criticize. Do this, and your enemies will be too ashamed to say anything against you (v. 8). And let your instruction be wise and wholesome, vigorous and irrefutable and above censure, so that your opponents may be put to shame, finding nothing discrediting or evil to say about you.

Paul is exhorting Titus, as a minister of the gospel to set a personal example before the people. A congregation has a right to expect its’ minister to exemplify in daily life that which he challenges them to do. It is never easy to pastor a church. You do not punch a clock; yet you are always on duty. You must be careful to practice what you preach; you must be the same person out of the pulpit as you are in the pulpit. Being a hypocrite in speech or conduct will be a great stumbling block in others coming to Christ. No pastor is perfect, just as no church member is perfect; but he must strive to be the best example possible. A church will never rise any higher than its leadership.

I never expect to be a pastor but have been a missionary for many years and have many who look to me to be a good example in a similar role as a pastor. How do I rate myself on a scale of 1-10 as being a godly example to others?

Titus 2:6-8 (English Standard Version)

Likewise, urge the younger men to be self-controlled. Show yourself in all respects to be a model of good works, and in your teaching show integrity, dignity, and sound speech that cannot be condemned, so that an opponent may be put to shame, having nothing evil to say about us.
