Greek Student Who Married Two Women Within 48 Hours

A Greek student in Athens, Greece, was sentenced to eight months imprisonment on charges of marrying two women within 48 hours. He appealed the sentence and was set free pending a new trial. The court heard that Petros Novaras, 29, married Vassiliki Chioti on Jan 24, 1971, in the central Greek town of Lamia, and took off in his car for a honeymoon. After engine trouble, he sent his wife down to Athens on a bus. In the meantime, he went to a suburb in Athens and married another 29-year-old, the court heard. He then continued his honeymoon with his second wife. At the court the accused testified: “Both families were putting unbearable pressure on me. So I decided to take them both so as not to hurt anybody’s feelings.” (Associated Press).
