Twenty-Five years ago, Christian Author and writer James Dobson said, “The Western world stands at a great crossroads in its history. It is my opinion that our very survival as a people will depend upon the presence or absence of masculine leadership in millions of hom … More

Preservation

This chapter describes how the Lord will preserve His people. Isaiah describes the situation which will exist when the kingdom is established on earth. He speaks of a future time when Israel and other nations will feast in peace and prosperity. This is after the worldwide judgment of God and it is referred to in the book of Revelation as the 1,000 year reign of Christ on earth.

In this song we find three striking images:

  1. The ruined city (vv 1-3) - Reference to “the city” (vv 2-3) is a generic term for all cities. In Isaiah’s time the people fled to the walled cities for protection. However, the great cities of the world will offer no protection when God pours out His wrath on the nations (Rev. 16:19).
  2. The refuge (vv 4-5) - God will be a refuge for His believing people during the great tribulation just prior to the millennial rein. He has always cared for His own through times of trial and judgment. He guarded Israel when His judgments fell on Egypt (Ex. 8:22-12:13). He kept Noah and his family through the flood (Gen. 6-8). He protected Rahab and her family when Jericho fell (Joshua 6:25). Down through centuries He has kept His people in spite of the attacks of Satan (Matt. 16:18) and will deliver His church from the wrath to come.
  3. The feast (vv 6-12) - The “feast” (v. 6) to the Old Testament Jew was a picture of the Kingdom age when the Messiah would reign over Israel and all the nations of the world. The “covering” and “veil” (v. 7) may refer to the blindness of Israel to Jesus Christ. When Christ comes back Israel “shall look upon me whom they have pierced” (Zach. 12:10).

Application

It is comforting to know that when the Lord speaks, He does what he says and His plans and activities are closely tied to His word. I want to be ready and waiting for the Lord’s return to earth.

Isaiah 25:1-12 (English Standard Version)

O LORD, you are my God; I will exalt you; I will praise your name, for you have done wonderful things, plans formed of old, faithful and sure. For you have made the city a heap, the fortified city a ruin; the foreigners' palace is a city no more; it will never be rebuilt. Therefore strong peoples will glorify you; cities of ruthless nations will fear you. For you have been a stronghold to the poor, a stronghold to the needy in his distress, a shelter from the storm and a shade from the heat; for the breath of the ruthless is like a storm against a wall, like heat in a dry place. You subdue the noise of the foreigners; as heat by the shade of a cloud, so the song of the ruthless is put down. On this mountain the LORD of hosts will make for all peoples a feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wine, of rich food full of marrow, of aged wine well refined. And he will swallow up on this mountain the covering that is cast over all peoples, the veil that is spread over all nations. He will swallow up death forever; and the Lord GOD will wipe away tears from all faces, and the reproach of his people he will take away from all the earth, for the LORD has spoken. It will be said on that day, "Behold, this is our God; we have waited for him, that he might save us. This is the LORD; we have waited for him; let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation." For the hand of the LORD will rest on this mountain, and Moab shall be trampled down in his place, as straw is trampled down in a dunghill. And he will spread out his hands in the midst of it as a swimmer spreads his hands out to swim, but the LORD will lay low his pompous pride together with the skill of his hands. And the high fortifications of his walls he will bring down, lay low, and cast to the ground, to the dust.
