God’s Armor for Our Daily Battles
November 1, 2019
Commentary
We are to “be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power” (v. 10), because spiritual battles require spiritual strength and daily dependence on God. Paul urges believers to “put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes” (v. 11). The word “wrestle” describes close, hand-to-hand combat—not a passive fight (v. 12). We are called to engage actively, not simply watch from the sidelines or grow careless. Satan uses clever and deceitful methods to trap and discourage us. He appears as “an angel of light” (2CO 11:14), trying to blind people to God’s truth. We must not underestimate his power or influence, for he is compared to both a roaring lion and a fierce dragon. When we belong to Christ, Satan and his forces still attempt to pull us away from faith and back into sin. Though our victory is certain in Christ, the battle continues daily until He returns in glory.
Therefore, we must “put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground” (v. 13). Each piece of armor—truth, righteousness, readiness, faith, salvation, and the Word of God—is vital for spiritual survival, strength, and protection. Christ has already conquered Satan, and He provides every weapon we need for victory through His Spirit and Word. Our task is to wear His armor faithfully through prayer, humility, and obedience every day. We are strengthened not by our own willpower, but by God’s Spirit living within us. We can boldly claim the promises, “If God is for us, who can be against us?” (ROM 8:31) and “I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength” (PHI 4:13). When we trust and stand firm in His power, victory becomes part of our daily walk with God.
Application
Do I face my daily battles in my own strength or with God’s armor? Today I will depend on His power, not my willpower. Which part of His armor do I need most right now? How will I put it on? I will stand firm in truth, pray faithfully, and trust Christ to give me strength and victory in every struggle.
Ephesians 6:10–17 (NET)
10 Finally, be strengthened in the Lord and in the strength of his power. 11 Clothe yourselves with the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world rulers of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavens. 13 For this reason, take up the full armor of God so that you may be able to stand your ground on the evil day, and having done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm therefore, by fastening the belt of truth around your waist, by putting on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 by fitting your feet with the preparation that comes from the good news of peace, 16 and in all of this, by taking up the shield of faith with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit (which is the word of God).
The Battle is Against Spiritual Powers
Every believer sooner or later will discover that the Christian life is a battleground, not a playground, and that he faces an enemy who is much stronger than we are, apart from the Lord. We need the power of God to stand against Satan because he … Continue
