We Are Never Satisfied and Always Want More
August 22, 2021
Commentary
I. Four kinds of undesirable behavior (vv. 11-14).
a. Disrespectful Children – a curse and a non-blessing to their parents (v. 11).
b. Hypocritical People – Clean in no one’s eyes but their own (v. 12).
c. Arrogant People – Their eyes are lifted (v. 13).
d. Oppressive People – They devour the poor and needy (v. 14).
II. Four things that are never satisfied (v. 16).
a. The Grave – Always wants more dead.
b. The Barren Womb – Always wants to give birth to a child.
c. The Land – Always wants more water.
d. Fire – Will devour anything in its path.
III. Four amazing things (vv. 18-19).
a. An eagle in the sky (v. 19).
b. A snake on a rock (v. 19).
c. A ship in the ocean (v. 19).
d. A man with a woman (v. 19).
Many today have rebelled from their parents, losing all self-respect, and living a life of immorality without any thought for the rest of the world or future generations. The world is not enough to satisfy the heart of man (v. 15). Don’t make fun of your father or disobey your mother; crows will peck out your eyes, and buzzards will eat the rest of you (v. 17). Hardened in her conscience, an adulterous woman (v. 20) lives in her sin and boldly says, “I have done no wickedness.” She treats it as lightly as if she had eaten a meal and wiped her mouth. Sexual sin is often excused today as normal. But God has declared He will “bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or evil” (Eccles. 12:14).
Application
I need to be satisfied with the things the Lord has given to me in life and not always wanting more. The heart of God must be broken as we are never satisfied and always wanting more.
Proverbs 30:11– 20 (NET)
11 There is a generation who curse their fathers and do not bless their mothers.
12 There is a generation who are pure in their own opinion and yet are not washed from their filthiness.
13 There is a generation whose eyes are so lofty, and whose eyelids are lifted up disdainfully.
14 There is a generation whose teeth are like swords and whose molars are like knives to devour the poor from the earth and the needy from among the human race.
15 The leech has two daughters: “Give! Give!” There are three things that will never be satisfied, four that have never said, “Enough” —
16 the grave, the barren womb; earth has not been satisfied with water; and fire has never said, “Enough!”
17 The eye that mocks at a father and despises obeying a mother— the ravens of the valley will peck it out and the young vultures will eat it.
18 There are three things that are too wonderful for me, four that I do not understand:
19 the way of an eagle in the sky, the way of a snake on a rock, the way of a ship in the sea, and the way of a man with a woman.
20 This is the way of an adulterous woman: she has eaten and wiped her mouth and has said, “I have not done wrong.”
