You Shall Love Your Neighbor as Yourself

Commentary
A scribe came to Jesus and asked which commandment was the greatest (v. 28). Jesus answered by quoting Scripture: “Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord: and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength” (vv. 29–30). He then added, “Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself” (v. 31). By joining these two commands, Jesus showed that true faith is not just about rules, but about love for God and love for others without limits, each day faithfully.
The scribe responded with understanding, agreeing that loving God and others is greater than all offerings (vv. 32–33). Jesus told him, “Thou art not far from the kingdom of God” (v. 34). This shows that knowing truth is important, but we must go further by fully following Jesus. It is possible to understand God’s Word, yet still miss a true relationship with Him if love is not lived out in our daily lives.
Jesus then asked about the identity of the Messiah. He showed that the Messiah is more than David’s son—He is David’s Lord (vv. 36–37). The people listened with interest, but many leaders did not understand. Jesus also warned about the scribes, who loved honor, attention, and position (vv. 38–40). They appeared religious, but their hearts were not right, and they often took advantage of others.
Finally, Jesus pointed to a poor widow who gave two small coins (vv. 41–44). Others gave out of their abundance, but she gave all she had. Jesus said her offering was greater because it came from sacrifice and trust. This teaches us that God values a sincere and willing heart more than outward appearance. True love for God is shown in humble devotion, selfless giving, and a life that seeks to honor Him.
Application
I consider how I live out my faith each day. Do I truly love God with my whole heart? Do I treat others with kindness and care? Am I practicing what I believe? Am I loving others like Jesus? Help me grow in love, follow You closely, and serve others with a sincere and humble heart in all I do each day faithfully.
Mark 12:28–44 (NET)
28 Now one of the experts in the law came and heard them debating. When he saw that Jesus answered them well, he asked him, “Which commandment is the most important of all?” 29 Jesus answered, “The most important is: ‘Listen, Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ 31 The second is: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” 32 The expert in the law said to him, “That is true, Teacher; you are right to say that he is one, and there is no one else besides him. 33 And to love him with all your heart, with all your mind, and with all your strength and to love your neighbor as yourself is more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.” 34 When Jesus saw that he had answered thoughtfully, he said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” Then no one dared any longer to question him.
35 While Jesus was teaching in the temple courts, he said, “How is it that the experts in the law say that the Christ is David’s son? 36 David himself, by the Holy Spirit, said, ‘The Lord said to my lord, “Sit at my right hand, until I put your enemies under your feet.”’
37 If David himself calls him ‘Lord,’ how can he be his son?” And the large crowd was listening to him with delight.
38 In his teaching Jesus also said, “Watch out for the experts in the law. They like walking around in long robes and elaborate greetings in the marketplaces, 39 and the best seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets. 40 They devour widows’ property, and as a show make long prayers. These men will receive a more severe punishment.”
41 Then he sat down opposite the offering box, and watched the crowd putting coins into it. Many rich people were throwing in large amounts. 42 And a poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, worth less than a penny. 43 He called his disciples and said to them, “I tell you the truth, this poor widow has put more into the offering box than all the others. 44 For they all gave out of their wealth. But she, out of her poverty, put in what she had to live on, everything she had.”
Jesus Has No Conditions on His Love
Have you ever heard one child tell another child I will not be your friend unless you do so and so? This is putting conditions on a friendship. Sometimes we forget that Jesus loves us unconditionally. He never says, “I’ll love you if … Continue
