Commentary

In this passage, Jesus gives a clear description of His second coming. He said there would be signs in nature, with the sun darkened and the stars falling (vv. 24–25). Then “they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds with great power and glory” (v. 26). He will send His angels to gather His people from all over the earth (v. 27). This reminds us that His return will be visible, powerful, and certain, calling us to live with hope and readiness, and to keep our hearts focused on Him above all else. We must live each day ready for His second return.

Jesus also spoke about the timing of these events (vv. 30–32). He said, “Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away” (v. 31). While people may try to predict when He will return, Jesus made it clear that no one knows the exact day or hour. This teaches us that our focus should not be on guessing the time, but on being prepared and faithful in our daily lives, trusting God’s perfect plan, and walking in obedience to His Word. We must prepared for His return.

Jesus then gave a practical lesson, using the example of a master who leaves his servants in charge (vv. 33–34). He said, “Watch ye therefore: for ye know not when the master of the house cometh” (v. 35). The key message is to stay alert and ready. We are to live each day faithfully, doing what God has called us to do, not knowing when He will return, but serving Him with diligence, faith, and a willing heart in all we do.

In an uncertain world, God’s Word remains unchanging and true. Jesus calls us to watch, to stay faithful, and to live with purpose. We are not to live in fear, but in readiness, knowing that He will come again. Each day is an opportunity to serve Him, grow in faith, and be prepared to meet Him face to face with confidence and joy.

Application

I reflect on how I live each day. Am I ready if Jesus returns? Do I stay alert and faithful, or become distracted? Am I trusting His Word more than this world? Teach me to live with purpose, obey You daily, and stay prepared, so my life reflects faith and readiness to meet You at any time. Keep my heart focus in You.

Mark 13:24–37 (NET)

24 “But in those days, after that suffering, the sun will be darkened and the moon will not give its light; 25 the stars will be falling from heaven, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken. 26 Then everyone will see the Son of Man arriving in the clouds with great power and glory. 27 Then he will send angels and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven.

28 “Learn this parable from the fig tree: Whenever its branch becomes tender and puts out its leaves, you know that summer is near. 29 So also you, when you see these things happening, know that he is near, right at the door. 30 I tell you the truth, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place. 31 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.

32 “But as for that day or hour no one knows it—neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son —except the Father. 33 Watch out! Stay alert! For you do not know when the time will come. 34 It is like a man going on a journey. He left his house and put his slaves in charge, assigning to each his work, and commanded the doorkeeper to stay alert. 35 Stay alert, then, because you do not know when the owner of the house will return—whether during evening, at midnight, when the rooster crows, or at dawn— 36 or else he might find you asleep when he returns suddenly. 37 What I say to you I say to everyone: Stay alert!”
