Assurance in God’s Enduring Promises

Commentary

It is evident that David wrote this Psalm while he was undergoing some type of banishment. It seems that he may have written it soon after Absalom’s rebellion had been crushed by Joab. Absalom was dead and it looked like the way was now clear for David to return to Jerusalem. However, David knew that he could not yet be sure that there would not be more fighting before his troubles were over. At a time in his life when he was distraught from fighting his enemies:

1. He offers his petition to the Lord (vv. 1-2)

2. He expresses his trust in the Lord (vv. 3-5)

3. He  prays for an extension of His kingship (vv. 6-7)

4. He offers a vow of thanksgiving to be delivered when God    answers (v. 8)

The Psalmist petitioned the Lord for strength and security because his heart was overwhelmed (v. 1). He asked that God lead him to “the rock that is higher than” he was, which denotes a place of safety (v. 2). David found comfort in the Lord as his shelter from danger (vv. 3-4). On the basis of God’s promise to him, David prayed for protection in God’s presence (vv. 5-7). He prayed that God would extend his own life and that God would continue to protect him.

Even though Absalom had been defeated, David was not yet back on the throne. He had to gain the support of the people once again. He knew how the temper of the people were always touchy and troublesome. David vowed to sing to and praise the Lord for His protection over him (v. 8). It is evident that he lived in the light of the promises of God. He might fail, but God could not fail.

Application

David made a vow to praise God each day. He continually praised God through both the good and difficult times of his life. I need to praise the Lord each day for his protection from sickness and the fiery darts of the evil one. As I do I’m sure I will find a peace in my life that comes no other way.
