Confidence That Dispels Fear

Commentary
No doubt each one of us has been a prisoner of fear at one time or another. It might be the fear of rejection, misunderstanding, uncertainty, sickness, or even death, but the Lord wants us to conquer it. This Psalm opens with David voicing his confidence in God. based on:
- The Lord’s personal dealings with him (v. 1). Notice his use of the personal pronouns “I” and “my” of His light, salvation and strength.
- The Lord’s past dealings with him (v. 2). David’s enemies had never been able to do him harm. Time and again when things seemed hopeless God had stepped in and delivered him.
- The Lord’s promised dealings with him (v. 3). David’s assurance, no doubt, had its roots in the fact that Samuel had anointed him king. God had promised him the throne and no man could prevent him from sitting on it.
There are two things that David wanted with all of his heart:
- The presence of the Lord (v. 4). Even though he had to flee from his enemies and could not go to the temple to worship his greatest desire was for fellowship with the Lord.
- The protection of the Lord (vv. 5-7). He cries out for the Lord to hide him (v. 5), and asks the Lord to help him (v. 6). His situation is very serious, but David has total confidence in God’s ability to protect him (v. 7).
We often run to God when we experience difficulties. As believers we can call on God for help at any time. However many of our problems could be avoided if taken to God beforehand.
Application
There are some things God has promised to do for me in the future? I need to share some of these with others even when I may be going through a tough time.
Psalms 27:1– 7 (NET)
1 The Lord is my light and my salvation. I fear no one. The Lord protects my life. I am afraid of no one.
2 When evil men attack me to devour my flesh, when my adversaries and enemies attack me, they stumble and fall.
3 Even when an army is deployed against me, I do not fear. Even when war is imminent, I remain confident.
4 I have asked the Lord for one thing— this is what I desire! I want to live in the Lord’s house all the days of my life, so I can gaze at the splendor of the Lord and contemplate in his temple.
5 He will surely give me shelter in the day of danger; he will hide me in his home. He will place me on an inaccessible rocky summit.
6 Now I will triumph over my enemies who surround me. I will offer sacrifices in his dwelling place and shout for joy. I will sing praises to the Lord.
7 Hear me, O Lord, when I cry out. Have mercy on me and answer me.
