Service

David and the temple officials chose the descendants of Asaph, Jeduthun and Heman to oversee music (v. 1). They took their orders directly from the king. They were to praise the Lord by playing cymbals, harps, and other stringed instruments. The following is a list of musicians and their duties as families:

      1.   Asaph’s four sons played music whenever the king told them to (v. 2).

      2.   Jeduthun’s six sons played harps and sang praises to the Lord (v. 3).

      3.   Heman’s 14 sons and 3 daughters played instruments during times of worship (vv. 4-6).

All of these were skilled musicians. David assigned them their duties by asking the Lord what He wanted them to do (vv. 7-8). The musicians were divided into 24 groups of 12, and each group went by the name of their family leader (vv. 9-31).

Application

Music has never been a strong suit of mine. I have always said that I can’t carry a tune in a basket and don’t know how to rest a note of music. However, I can see how music and musical instrument were and important part of temple worship and does play an important part in any Church. This portion of Scripture certainly supports the fact that music in very important in the life and effectiveness of any local church.
