Jesus Feeds 5000 in a Jewish Area
October 18, 2021
Commentary
The feeding of the five thousand is the only miracle recorded in all four Gospels. It took place after the disciples returned from their mission, and Jesus invited them to rest (vv. 30–31). They traveled by boat to a quiet place on the eastern shore of the Sea of Galilee (v. 32). However, the crowds saw them leaving and ran ahead on foot, arriving before them (v. 33). When Jesus saw the people, He was moved with compassion and began to teach them, showing His care for their spiritual needs (v. 34), and reminding us of His deep love for every person who seeks Him, calling us to respond with open heart.
As evening came, the disciples became concerned because there was no food available in that place (vv. 35–36). Jesus told them, “Give ye them to eat” (v. 37). They found five loaves and two fish, a very small amount for such a large crowd (v. 38). Jesus instructed the people to sit down in groups on the grass (vv. 39–40). Then He took the food, gave thanks, broke it, and gave it to the disciples to distribute. Everyone ate and was satisfied, and twelve baskets of leftovers were collected (vv. 41–44), showing God’s abundant provision beyond human limits, and teaching us to trust Him fully in every need we face, even when resources seem small, and situations feel uncertain.
This miracle teaches us that God can use what we offer, no matter how small. He can multiply our time, resources, and faith for His purpose. What seems limited in our hands becomes more than enough in His. When we trust Him and give what we have, He provides in ways that go beyond our understanding, meeting needs and blessing others through our simple obedience and will-ing hearts each day, as we learn to depend on Him more fully and walk by faith in every step we take.
Application
How I respond to needs around me. Do I trust Jesus when what I have seems small? Am I willing to offer what I have and obey His leading? Do I believe He can multiply my efforts? Do I depend on You daily? Help me trust Your provision, give with a willing heart, and serve others with faith today, knowing You are enough.
Mark 6:30–44 (NET)
30 Then the apostles gathered around Jesus and told him everything they had done and taught. 31 He said to them, “Come with me privately to an isolated place and rest a while” (for many were coming and going, and there was no time to eat). 32 So they went away by themselves in a boat to some remote place. 33 But many saw them leaving and recognized them, and they hurried on foot from all the towns and arrived there ahead of them. 34 As Jesus came ashore he saw the large crowd and he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he taught them many things.
35 When it was already late, his disciples came to him and said, “This is an isolated place and it is already very late. 36 Send them away so that they can go into the surrounding countryside and villages and buy something for themselves to eat.” 37 But he answered them, “You give them something to eat.” And they said, “Should we go and buy bread for 200 silver coins and give it to them to eat?” 38 He said to them, “How many loaves do you have? Go and see.” When they found out, they said, “Five—and two fish.” 39 Then he directed them all to sit down in groups on the green grass. 40 So they reclined in groups of hundreds and fifties. 41 He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. He gave them to his disciples to serve the people, and he divided the two fish among them all. 42 They all ate and were satisfied, 43 and they picked up the broken pieces and fish that were left over, twelve baskets full. 44 Now there were 5,000 men who ate the bread.
Nothing But Leftovers
The most remarkable thing about my mother is that for thirty years she served us nothing but leftovers. The original meal had never been found. (Source Unknown).
