Jesus Declares All Foods Clean

Commentary
In this passage, Jesus challenged a system that placed rules and regulations above human need (vv. 14–15). God’s command is that love for others should come first, yet the religious leaders emphasized legal rules instead. Jesus made it clear that any rule that prevents helping others is a contradiction of God’s will. “There is nothing from without a man that entering into him can defile him.” He wanted people to understand the deeper meaning behind true obedience. We must be careful not to let rules keep us from showing love. Love should guide every action and decision we make daily. True obedience always reflects compassion and care for others.
In the Old Testament, the Pharisees were very strict about ceremonial cleanliness, not only for their bodies but also for cups, pots, and vessels. The traditions included many detailed instructions for washing. Over time, these practices became more important than God’s clear commands. These rules were followed carefully but often without true understanding. Their focus slowly shifted from God’s truth to human tradition. They replaced sincere obedience with outward observance of rules, thinking this made them acceptable before God.
Jesus explained that a person is not defiled by what he eats, but by what comes from his heart (vv. 20–23). “For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts.” Food passes through the body, but sin begins in the heart. Jesus listed many sins that come from within, showing the seriousness of the human condition. These inner sins reveal our deep need for God’s cleansing grace, that the real problem is inward, not outward. When people value outward acts more than inward change, it becomes “hypocrisy” and is no longer true faith.
Application
Do I show love, or just follow rules? What is coming out of my thoughts and words today? Do I truly desire inner change more than outward appearance? Will I ask Him to cleanse my heart and help me live with real love and sincerity in every moment today? Will I guard my thoughts and actions carefully?
Mark 7:14–23 (NET)
14 Then he called the crowd again and said to them, “Listen to me, everyone, and understand. 15 There is nothing outside of a person that can defile him by going into him. Rather, it is what comes out of a person that defiles him.”
17 Now when Jesus had left the crowd and entered the house, his disciples asked him about the parable. 18 He said to them, “Are you so foolish? Don’t you understand that whatever goes into a person from outside cannot defile him? 19 For it does not enter his heart but his stomach, and then goes out into the sewer.” (This means all foods are clean.) 20 He said, “What comes out of a person defiles him. 21 For from within, out of the human heart, come evil ideas, sexual immorality, theft, murder, 22 adultery, greed, evil, deceit, debauchery, envy, slander, pride, and folly. 23 All these evils come from within and defile a person.”
Compay is Coming
Hypocrisy can be illustrated by the way we clean house when company is coming. We shove our junk in the closet, stuff it under the bed, etc. where it can’t be seen. Out of sight it doesn’t exist at least to our guests. That is not a ho … Continue
