Jesus Faces Opposition
July 12, 2022
Commentary
In a very busy time, Jesus faced opposition from both friends and enemies. News reached His relatives in Nazareth that He was out of His mind, so they came to take Him home. His own brothers did not believe in Him (Jn. 7:5). He had left a stable life to become a preacher with no place to rest. He also challenged the religious leaders and gathered a group of unlikely followers. To many, this seemed strange and even foolish, confusing those who did not understand His purpose and causing doubt and concern to those around Him.
ââ
At the same time, teachers of the law came from Jerusalem to stop Him. They could not deny His power, so they claimed it came from evil. Jesus warned them about this serious sin. âHe that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgivenessâ (v. 29). Their words showed hard and stubborn hearts that refused to see the truth, rejecting the light that was clearly before them each day.
ââ
Jesusâ family came, thinking He needed help. They loved Him, but they misunderstood His mission. Sometimes, even those close to us can become a hindrance. They may offer comfort or advice that leads us away from Godâs will. We must seek Godâs direction through prayer and follow it, even when others do not understand, trusting His plan above human opinions and feelings.
ââ
When Jesus was told that His mother and brothers were outside, He said, âWhosoever shall do the will of God, the same is my brother, and my sister, and motherâ (vv. 33â35). He was not rejecting His earthly family but teaching that spiritual relationships are greater. True family is made of those who follow God, share faith, and seek His purpose together, growing together in love, unity, and obedience.
Application
Do I follow Jesus even when others misunderstand me? Am I listening to Godâs truth or to doubtful voices around me? Do I allow comfort or opinions to pull me away from His will? I want to trust Him fully and obey His Word. Who helps me grow in faith? What step will I take to stay faithful and have a willing heart to obey?
Mark 3:20–35 (NET)
20 Now Jesus went home, and a crowd gathered so that they were not able to eat. 21 When his family heard this they went out to restrain him, for they said, âHe is out of his mind.â 22 The experts in the law who came down from Jerusalem said, âHe is possessed by Beelzebul,â and, âBy the ruler of demons he casts out demons!â 23 So he called them and spoke to them in parables: âHow can Satan cast out Satan? 24 If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom will not be able to stand. 25 If a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand. 26 And if Satan rises against himself and is divided, he is not able to stand and his end has come. 27 But no one is able to enter a strong manâs house and steal his property unless he first ties up the strong man. Then he can thoroughly plunder his house. 28 I tell you the truth, people will be forgiven for all sins, even all the blasphemies they utter. 29 But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven, but is guilty of an eternal sinâ 30 (because they said, âHe has an unclean spiritâ).
31 Then Jesusâ mother and his brothers came. Standing outside, they sent word to him, to summon him. 32 A crowd was sitting around him and they said to him, âLook, your mother and your brothers are outside looking for you.â 33 He answered them and said, âWho are my mother and my brothers?â 34 And looking at those who were sitting around him in a circle, he said, âHere are my mother and my brothers! 35 For whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother.â
David Livingstone Walked Over 29,000 Miles
I think of David Livingstone, the pioneer missionary to Africa, who walked over 29,000 miles. His wife died early in their ministry and he faced stiff opposition from his Scottish brethren. He ministered half blind. His kind of perseverance spurs … Continue
