Jesus is Questioned about His Authority
November 19, 2021
Commentary
While Jesus was walking in the temple, He was confronted by the priests, the scribes, and the elders, known as the Sanhedrin (v. 27). They asked, “By what authority doest thou these things?” (v. 28), referring to His cleansing of the temple. Jesus did not avoid their question, but He refused to support their hypocrisy. He answered with a question: “The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or of men?” (vv. 29–30), wisely revealing their true motives and hidden intentions.
These leaders were trapped by their own reasoning. They were not asking what was true, but what was safe. If they said John was from heaven, they would be condemned for not believing him. If they said from men, they feared the people. Their response showed their hearts were not seeking truth, but protecting themselves (vv. 31–33), and avoiding personal conviction before God.
Their silence revealed their true condition. They were more concerned about their position than about God’s truth. Instead of humbly listening, they resisted Jesus because He challenged their authority. This led them deeper into confusion and spiritual blindness, leaving them unable to respond with honesty or faith, and unwilling to change their hardened hearts despite clear truth before them.
This passage shows the danger of refusing truth. A person who faces truth may feel humbled, but he can grow and move forward. But one who rejects truth becomes more trapped, losing clarity and direction. God calls us to be honest, to seek truth, and to respond with humility and willing hearts before Him, choosing truth even when it is difficult. It requires daily devotion and personal change that leads to lasting freedom, peace, and spiritual maturity.
Application
Am I seeking truth or just safety? When God shows me something, do I accept it or avoid it? Will I listen honestly and change? Am I willing to admit when I am wrong? I want to respond with humility, not pride. Choose truth, even when it is hard, and follow the Lord with willingness and sincere heart.
Mark 11:27–33 (NET)
27 They came again to Jerusalem. While Jesus was walking in the temple courts, the chief priests, the experts in the law, and the elders came up to him 28 and said, “By what authority are you doing these things? Or who gave you this authority to do these things?” 29 Jesus said to them, “I will ask you one question. Answer me and I will tell you by what authority I do these things: 30 John’s baptism—was it from heaven or from people? Answer me.” 31 They discussed with one another, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say, ‘Then why did you not believe him?’ 32 But if we say, ‘From people—’” (they feared the crowd, for they all considered John to be truly a prophet). 33 So they answered Jesus, “We don’t know.” Then Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.”
