Jesus Sends His Disciples as Missionaries

Commentary
Returning to His hometown, Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach (vv. 1–2). The people knew Him as the village carpenter and were not impressed. They questioned His wisdom, saying they knew His family and background (v. 3). Because of their unbelief, Jesus said, “A prophet is without honor in his own country” (v. 4). In that place, He did not perform many mighty works (v. 5). Their lack of faith limited what they received. Yet Jesus continued to teach in nearby villages, showing that God’s work moves forward even when some reject it.
This reminds us that a hard and unbelieving heart can hinder spiritual growth. When people become too familiar, they may fail to see God at work. Even today, a cold and critical attitude can weaken the impact of truth. God calls us not only to hear His Word, but to respond with faith, humility, and openness, allowing Him to work deeply in our hearts and lives each day. Open your heart to Him honestly.
After a time of training, Jesus sent out His disciples in pairs (v. 7). He gave them authority over unclean spirits and instructed them to travel simply, taking little with them (vv. 8–10). This taught them to trust God and depend on others. He also told them that if people refused to listen, they should “shake off the dust” (v. 11) as a testimony. The disciples went out, preaching and calling people to God (vv. 12–13).
Their mission shows that true disciples carry God’s message, not their own ideas. They were called to live simply, trust fully, and give generously. The message of repentance calls for a real change of heart and life. It may be difficult, but it leads to true freedom, growth, and a life that is centered on God’s truth and purpose for all people.
Application
I reflect on my response to Jesus and His Word. Do I overlook Him because I feel too familiar? Is my heart humble and ready, or closed and critical? Am I willing to follow and trust where He leads? How can I receive Your truth with faith, live with simplicity, and share Your message with obedience and love each day?
Mark 6:1–13 (NET)
1 Now Jesus left that place and came to his hometown, and his disciples followed him. 2 When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue. Many who heard him were astonished, saying, “Where did he get these ideas? And what is this wisdom that has been given to him? What are these miracles that are done through his hands? 3 Isn’t this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? And aren’t his sisters here with us?” And so they took offense at him. 4 Then Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown, and among his relatives, and in his own house.” 5 He was not able to do a miracle there, except to lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them. 6 And he was amazed because of their unbelief. Then he went around among the villages and taught.
7 Jesus called the twelve and began to send them out two by two. He gave them authority over the unclean spirits. 8 He instructed them to take nothing for the journey except a staff —no bread, no bag, no money in their belts— 9 and to put on sandals but not to wear two tunics. 10 He said to them, “Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave the area. 11 If a place will not welcome you or listen to you, as you go out from there, shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them.” 12 So they went out and preached that all should repent. 13 They cast out many demons and anointed many sick people with olive oil and healed them.
Nicholes – Christianity But Not Conversion
For too long there have been churches who have felt that it’s all right for nice people to get together in their Sunday best, and listen to pleasant choir specials and little sermons that make them feel good about themselves and their homes … Continue
