Jesus Teaches in Parables

Commentary
In our passage today, we look at three parables of Jesus, and each one contains a paradox about God’s Kingdom. A paradox is a statement or idea that seems contradictory but reveals truth. It invites us to think more deeply. First, a lamp (4:21–23). Even though God’s kingdom came into our world concealed, God desires for it to be revealed and made known. Second, a scale (4:24–25). Even though God’s kingdom can be difficult to understand, we grow in understanding when we invest ourselves in listening and responding. Third, a growing seed (4:26–29). Even though God calls us to share the message, His kingdom grows in ways that are beyond human effort and control.
In this context, hearing means listening carefully to Jesus and His kingdom message, especially through the parables (vv. 24–25). “Take heed what ye hear: with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you.” The measure we use in hearing determines what we receive in understanding. If we respond with openness, we are given more. This shows the importance of a willing heart. If we ignore or resist, even what we have fades. Spiritual dullness can slowly grow without awareness.
Jesus also reminds us that growth takes time. “First the blade, then the ear, after that the full corn in the ear.” When good seed is planted in good soil, growth is slow and often unseen. Day by day, changes may seem very small. At times, progress feels almost invisible. We may not notice daily change, but over time, there is clear progress. The same is true in the Christian life. After the seed is sown, we must allow time for growth. We should not expect instant maturity. God works patiently in ways we cannot always see. Spiritual growth is gradu-al, but if we remain patient and faithful, there will one day be a harvest.
Application
Am I hiding God’s truth or sharing it? Do I listen carefully, or only hear lightly? What measure am I giving to God right now? Am I truly open to His voice today? Am I patient with my growth, or do I rush it? I choose to listen, obey, and trust Him. Even if I cannot see change today, will I stay faithful and let Him work?
Mark 4:21–29 (NET)
21 He also said to them, “A lamp isn’t brought to be put under a basket or under a bed, is it? Isn’t it to be placed on a lampstand? 22 For nothing is hidden except to be revealed, and nothing concealed except to be brought to light. 23 If anyone has ears to hear, he had better listen!” 24 And he said to them, “Take care about what you hear. The measure you use will be the measure you receive, and more will be added to you. 25 For whoever has will be given more, but whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken from him.”
26 He also said, “The kingdom of God is like someone who spreads seed on the ground. 27 He goes to sleep and gets up, night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows, though he does not know how. 28 By itself the soil produces a crop, first the stalk, then the head, then the full grain in the head. 29 And when the grain is ripe, he sends in the sickle because the harvest has come.”
Jack Wyrtzen Preached in Parables
Jack Wyrtzen used lots of stories in his preaching. One day someone was talking with one of the Word of Life staff members and said, “ I heard Jack preach one of his “skyscraper messages” the other night.” The staff member … Continue
