Judas’ Arrives to Betray Jesus
January 1, 2020
Commentary
As Jesus was speaking, Judas arrived (v. 43). Notice here, as well as in verses 10 and 20, the phrase “one of the twelve.” The traitor’s act was now being carried out. John’s Gospel tells us that Satan had put it into Judas’ heart to betray Jesus. It was a custom to greet a rabbi with a kiss, showing respect and affection. Here, however, it became a painful act of betrayal. Judas said, “Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he” (vv. 44–45). The kiss, meant for love, became a sign of deceit, revealing a heart far from true devotion. Even in calling Him “Master,” Judas hid his false intent, masking betrayal with false loyalty.
According to John’s account, Jesus willingly gave Himself into their hands, showing that Judas’ signal had no real power. The arresting crowd came from the chief priests, scribes, and elders, carrying swords and clubs as if expecting resistance (vv. 46–47). Yet Jesus stepped forward and said, “I was daily with you in the temple teaching, and ye took me not: but the scriptures must be fulfilled” (vv. 48–49). In this moment, His calm authority stood in contrast to their fear and confusion. Everything unfolded according to God’s plan, not human control, revealing divine purpose even in human evil actions and choices.
At this point, all the disciples forsook Him and fled (v. 50). Fear overcame their promises of loyalty. One young man, trying to follow, fled naked, leaving his linen cloth behind (vv. 51–52). This scene reveals the weakness of human courage without God’s strength. Even those closest to Jesus failed in the moment of testing. Yet through it all, Jesus remained faithful, standing alone, ready to face the suffering ahead with steady obedience, fulfilling His mission to the very end, showing perfect love despite abandonment and deep personal sorrow.
Application
Do I show love but hide wrong motives? Am I faithful when it is hard, or do I run away in fear? Jesus stayed true even when others failed. Will I choose honesty and courage today? How can I follow Him with a sincere and obedient heart? What step can I take faithfully to trust Him more each day?
Mark 14:43–52 (NET)
43 Right away, while Jesus was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, arrived. With him came a crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent by the chief priests and experts in the law and elders. 44 (Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “The one I kiss is the man. Arrest him and lead him away under guard.”) 45 When Judas arrived, he went up to Jesus immediately and said, “Rabbi!” and kissed him. 46 Then they took hold of him and arrested him. 47 One of the bystanders drew his sword and struck the high priest’s slave, cutting off his ear. 48 Jesus said to them, “Have you come with swords and clubs to arrest me like you would an outlaw? 49 Day after day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts, yet you did not arrest me. But this has happened so that the scriptures would be fulfilled.” 50 Then all the disciples left him and fled. 51 A young man was following him, wearing only a linen cloth. They tried to arrest him, 52 but he ran off naked, leaving his linen cloth behind.
