Honesty

When two people had a dispute they could not settle by themselves they could bring it before the judges who would determine who was guilty. The guilty person was to then be beaten in front of the presiding judge with 40 lashes of the whip.

A principle concerning the working ox is given. He is not to be muzzled or deprived of food. The Apostle Paul applied this principle in I Timothy 5:18 to those laboring for Christ (I Corinthians 9:9-10) when he said “the labor is worthy of his reward. The law of the kinsman redeemer is given (vv. 5-10). Marriage to a divorced or widowed sister-in-law was forbidden (Lev. 18:16) unless the following conditions were met: The brothers must have inherited their father’s property jointly, and the deceased brother must have died without a male heir. Then the brother was obligated to marry the widow and thus provide a male heir. His refusal to do this was a disgrace.

Moses gives definite regulations concerning business life in Israel (v. 13-16). Often a person would have two stones in his bag for weighing. He would use the large one for buying and the small one for selling which revealed how deceitful he really was. Moses tells them to only have one stone and they are to be totally honest in their dealings.

Application

I need to be completely truthful and honest in all my business dealings. When I sell something, I need to be sure I give good measure.
