Compromise

This chapter opens with a new act of war being declared by the Philistines against Israel. With this, David finds himself in a compromising situation as King Achish asks David and his troops to join forces with the Philistines against Israel. If he said no, he would be in big trouble and if he said yes, he would be fighting against his own people. He had no choice but to reply ambiguously and start toward the battle field.

As Saul watches the buildup of Philistine forces, he becomes very fearful. He inquires of the Lord what he should do but God refuses to answer him. In desperation, Saul goes to the witch of Endor, asking her to bring Samuel back from the dead so he can get his advice as to what he should do. To her amazement, Samuel speaks and informs Saul that his kingdom is being taken from him. In terror, Saul falls on his face before Samuel but he is not moved to repentance and goes back to his troops.

Application

I have wondered sometimes why it doesn’t seem that God is answering my prayers?  Like Saul, I need to keep in mind that, unless I obey the principles God has given me in His word, I should not expect Him to give me further guidance.
