Standing in The Faith
May 2, 2022
Commentary
In addition to remembering what the Apostles had said Jude exhorts them to:
- Be building themselves up in the faith (v. 20).
- Be praying for hearers to be filled with the Holy Spirit (v. 20).
- Be keeping themselves “in God’s love” (v. 21).
- Be waiting or looking expectantly for the return of Christ for His church (v. 21).
In fact the main purpose of this letter is to equip Christians to live in a context of false teaching. We need to remember that the battle against false teaching is not won by argument. “To Him belongs the glory, and the majesty, and the power, and the authority for ever.”
Jude gives us an outline for propagating the faith (vv. 20-25).
- Keep growing (v. 20)
- Keep praying (v. 20)
- Keep loving (vv. 21-23)
- Keep trusting (v. 24-25)
Jude encouraged the believers to remain firm in their faith and trust in God for their future.
Application
No matter how much false teaching there may be around me I must never give up in despair. God can keep me from falling and He guarantees that if I remain faithful He will bring me into His presence and give me everlasting joy.
Jude 1:20– 25 (NET)
20 But you, dear friends, by building yourselves up in your most holy faith, by praying in the Holy Spirit, 21 maintain yourselves in the love of God, while anticipating the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that brings eternal life. 22 And have mercy on those who waver; 23 save others by snatching them out of the fire; have mercy on others, coupled with a fear of God, hating even the clothes stained by the flesh.
24 Now to the one who is able to keep you from falling, and to cause you to stand, rejoicing, without blemish before his glorious presence, 25 to the only God our Savior through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, power, and authority, before all time, and now, and for all eternity. Amen.
