The Conditions for Gaining Wisdom
February 12, 2025
Commentary
If we as Christians are going to have wisdom, I see this passage laying down six conditions that will result in six blessings (promises). Notice the CONDITIONS laid out in the first four verses:
- Receive my words (v. 1).
- Treasure my instructions (v. 1).
- Incline your ear (v. 2).
- Apply your heart (v. 2).
- Cry out for discernment (v. 3).
- Seek for hidden treasures (v. 4).
If these conditions are met BLESSINGS will be sure to follow as outlined in the next five verses:
- You will understand the fear of the Lord (v. 5).
- You will gain knowledge and understanding of God (vv. 5-6).
- The Lord will grant you wisdom (v. 6).
- He will grant good sense to the godly (v. 7).
- He will give protection to those who walk with integrity (vv. 7-8).
- He will give understanding as to what is just, right and fair (v. 9).
Application
If blessing comes from what I glean from these conditions I need to be applying them in my daily life and sharing this with others. Then I need to be encouraging others in my family to do the same.
Proverbs 2:1– 9 (NET)
1 My child, if you receive my words, and store up my commands inside yourself,
2 by making your ear attentive to wisdom, and by turning your heart to understanding,
3 indeed, if you call out for discernment — shout loudly for understanding—
4 if you seek it like silver, and search for it like hidden treasure,
5 then you will understand how to fear the Lord, and you will discover knowledge about God.
6 For the Lord gives wisdom, and from his mouth comes knowledge and understanding.
7 He stores up effective counsel for the upright, and is like a shield for those who live with integrity,
8 to guard the paths of the righteous and to protect the way of his pious ones.
9 Then you will understand righteousness and justice and equity—every good way.
