The Pharisees Ask Jesus for a Sign from Heaven
November 3, 2022
Commentary
The willful unbelief of the Pharisees deeply troubled Jesus. Their demand for a sign did not come from a sincere desire to know God, but from spiritual blindness. They had already seen many miracles, yet they refused to believe. The true order of faith is not seeing first but believing first. Jesus pointed to this when He asked, “Do ye not yet perceive, neither understand?” (v. 17). Faith begins with a heart that is willing to trust God even when we do not fully understand His ways.
Jesus then left with His disciples and crossed the Sea of Galilee to Dalmanutha (v. 10). The Pharisees came and began to argue with Him, asking for a sign from heaven to test Him (v. 11). Jesus sighed deeply and said, “There shall no sign be given unto this generation” (vv. 12–13). He used this moment to warn His disciples about the dangerous influence of the Pharisees and Herod. Their hypocrisy, pride, and worldly thinking could easily spread like yeast and affect others.
The disciples, however, were focused on the fact that they had forgotten to bring bread (vv. 14–16). They worried about physical needs, missing the spiritual lesson Jesus was teaching. He reminded them of the times He fed the large crowds and asked why they still lacked understanding (vv. 17–21). They had seen His power, yet they struggled to trust Him fully in new situations that required deeper faith and dependence on Him.
This passage teaches us to remember what God has already done in our lives. Instead of doubting, we should grow in faith. When we learn from past experiences, we gain confidence that God will continue to provide. Faith looks beyond present problems and trusts in God’s power, wisdom, and faithful care in every situation we face.
Application
Do I demand signs, or do I choose to trust God? Am I forgetting what He has already done in my life? Do I allow wrong influences to shape my thinking? Why do I worry about small things? Do I trust Him in every situation? Remember the Lord’s faithfulness and grow in trusting Him, even when you do not fully understand His plan.
Mark 8:10–21 (NET)
10 Immediately he got into a boat with his disciples and went to the district of Dalmanutha.
11 Then the Pharisees came and began to argue with Jesus, asking for a sign from heaven to test him. 12 Sighing deeply in his spirit he said, “Why does this generation look for a sign? I tell you the truth, no sign will be given to this generation.” 13 Then he left them, got back into the boat, and went to the other side.
14 Now they had forgotten to take bread, except for one loaf they had with them in the boat. 15 And Jesus ordered them, “Watch out! Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod!” 16 So they began to discuss with one another about having no bread. 17 When he learned of this, Jesus said to them, “Why are you arguing about having no bread? Do you still not see or understand? Have your hearts been hardened? 18 Though you have eyes, don’t you see? And though you have ears, can’t you hear? Don’t you remember? 19 When I broke the five loaves for the 5,000, how many baskets full of pieces did you pick up?” They replied, “Twelve.” 20 “When I broke the seven loaves for the 4,000, how many baskets full of pieces did you pick up?” They replied, “Seven.” 21 Then he said to them, “Do you still not understand?”
