Follow a Father’s Wisdom
November 30, 2021
Commentary
The author, knowing the depravity of the human heart and the constant need for warning, gives another full chapter that speaks strongly against lust and immorality. He begins by teaching that even the best advice is useless against powerful temptation unless it is taken deeply to heart and practiced through habits (v. 1). Concern in this area should be as careful and protective as guarding the pupil of one’s eye (v. 2). Often, the problem is not a lack of knowledge, but a failure to live out the truth we already know. God’s wisdom must move from hearing to obedience if it is to shape our choices and protect our lives in moments. This kind of obedience forms character, builds spiritual strength, and creates habits that guide us in hidden places.
It is the steady practice of studying, memorizing, and meditating on the Word of God that helps keep us from sin (Psalm 119:11). The writer points out that God’s commands are to be bound on the hands and written on the heart (v. 3). This clearly goes beyond an occasional or casual reading of Scripture. God’s Word must shape our actions and guide our inner thoughts if it is to guard us effectively. When Scripture fills both mind and heart, it becomes a constant guide in moments of pressure, confusion, and daily decision-making.
One of Satan’s tools in tempting this young man is flattery, and this is exactly what the immoral woman uses. Wisdom and understanding are neces-sary to escape this trap (vv. 4–5). A person must know wisdom as closely as a sister and treat understanding as a trusted relative. Only a close, personal relationship with godly wisdom can protect the heart from deception and danger. Without this closeness, temptation can slowly appear harmless, reasonable, and attractive.
Application
I reflect on what guides my choices today. Am I storing God’s Word in my heart or only hearing it? What habits need correction now? Where must I set clear boundaries today to protect my heart? Who influences me most right now? Will I choose wisdom over flattery in my thoughts, words, and actions today with humility?
Proverbs 7:1–9 (NET)
1 My child, devote yourself to my words and store up my commands inside yourself.
2 Keep my commands so that you may live, and obey my instruction as your most prized possession.
3 Bind them on your forearm; write them on the tablet of your heart.
4 Say to wisdom, “You are my sister,” and call understanding a close relative,
5 so that they may keep you from the adulterous woman, from the loose woman who has flattered you with her words.
6 For at the window of my house through my window lattice I looked out
7 and I saw among the naive — I discerned among the youths — a young man who lacked sense.
8 He was passing by the street near her corner, making his way along the road to her house
9 in the twilight, the evening, in the dark of the night.
