THE TRESPASS OFFERING – Chapters 5-6
The trespass offering (v. 6) was to atone for specific acts of sin (vv. 1-5) of which a man was fully aware. This offering was needed for two kinds of sins. (1) The sins that were against “the holy things of the Lord” (5:15). (2) The sins that were against a person’s neighbor (6:1-7).
Three specific sins are mentioned:
1. The witness who refused to testify. (v. 1) – at the public investigation of a crime.
2. Accidental ceremonial defilement. (vv. 2,3) – touches the unclean carcass of a beast.
3. Idle swearing. (v. 4) – an oath that is thoughtlessly uttered.
Three specific offerings are prescribed.
1. A female goat or sheep (vv. 5-6) – For the more wealthy.
2. Two Turtle doves or young Pigeons (v. 7) – For those who could not afford a sheep. One of the birds was burned in its entirety and the other apparently became the priest’s portion (vv. 8-10).
3. The tenth part of an ephah of a fine flower (vv. 11-13) – For those in the poverty level.
This Trespass Offering illustrates the fact that it is a costly thing for people to sin and for God to cleanse us. Our sins hurt God and they also hurt others. The nation of Israel had to offer six different sacrifices in order to have a right relationship with God, but Jesus Christ “offered one sacrifice for sins forever” (Heb. 10:12).
Application
Jesus is my sin offering as He bore my sins in His body on the cross (I Peter 2;24).
