Moses continues to deal with various Israelite laws in this chapter. He deals with the need for maintaining purity in the religious assembly (vv. 1-8). He gives three types of people that were excluded from Israel’s “worship service.”
1. A male mutilated in his sexual members (v. 1).
2. A child of Illegitimate birth (v. 2).
3. Amorite and Moabite people (vv. 3-6).
Dealing with purity in the war camp (vv. 9-14). Moses instructed the people to keep from every wicked thing. They were not to defile their camp with any uncleanness, so that when Jehovah walked through the camp, He would not see any unclean thing and turn away from Israel. The soldiers were to carry a shovel and dig a hole for their demands of nature (v. 13).
Slaves who escaped from a foreign country and sought refuge in Israel were allowed to dwell in the land (vv. 15-16). On the other hand, male and female prostitutes of Israelite descent were not tolerated (vv. 17-18).
When it came to lending money and charging interest to an Israelite brother there was to be no interest charged. However, an Israelite was permitted to charge a foreigner interest (vv. 19-20). When a man vowed a vow and added the Lord’s name to that vow, he was required to pay it (vv. 21-23). The rule for eating grain in a neighbor’s field was that nothing could be put in a container. He could only pick that which he could eat immediately (vv. 24-25).
Application
God had to warn the people against the practice of extramarital sex. Today we still need to hear his warnings. Temptations are still strong for both the married and unmarried.
