Walk as a New Person in Christ

Commentary
The Ephesian believers were Gentiles. Paul urges them to make a clean break from their former ways and stop living by the standards of those who do not know God (v. 17). These pagan Gentiles had surrendered them-selves to a life without moral direction. Their minds had become darkened and confused, unable to distinguish right from wrong (v. 18). Their hearts were hardened, and they had lost all sensitivity to sin. With their consciences deadened, they no longer hated evil or desired holiness (v. 19).
In contrast to this old way of life, Christ calls believers to renounce sin and live in righteousness and purity. Paul writes, “But you have not so learned Christ” (v. 20). Notice, he does not say “learned about Christ.” A per-son can know facts about Jesus and still not be saved. To “learn Christ” means to have a living, personal relationship with Him—to know Him personally, not just intellectually. For example, I can study about Abraham Lincoln from history books, but I can never truly “learn him,” for he is dead.
Christ, however, is alive, and we can “learn Him” through daily fellowship. This relationship grows through study of the Word (2TI 2:15) and prayer. The better we understand the Word of God, the better we will know the Son of God. Paul reminds them, “He is the truth, and you heard about Him and were taught in Him” (v. 21). They were told that their sinful desires would destroy them and that they must “put off the old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires” (v. 22). Every believer must daily lay aside the habits of the old nature and live as a new person in Christ.
Application
Have I truly left behind my old way of life (like old clothes to be thrown away), or do I still follow the world’s habits and attitudes? Today I want to grow closer to Christ by renewing my mind through His Word. What old thoughts or behaviors must I give up? I will ask God to help me live as a new person, living His truth and love.
Ephesians 4:17–22 (NET)
17 So I say this, and insist in the Lord, that you no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking. 18 They are darkened in their understanding, being alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardness of their hearts. 19 Because they are callous, they have given themselves over to indecency for the practice of every kind of impurity with greediness. 20 But you did not learn about Christ like this, 21 if indeed you heard about him and were taught in him, just as the truth is in Jesus. 22 You were taught with reference to your former way of life to lay aside the old man who is being corrupted in accordance with deceitful desires,
