John Huss – Respect Over Conscience

It has been told that when John Huss was burned at the stake as a heretic, a poor widow brought a small piece of wood to the officiating priest with the request it be put on the pile, right close to the stake. John Huss said to her, “Woman, what have I done to you that makes you hate me so?” She replied, “You are a heretic. I am poor and can not afford the price for this small piece of wood, but to burn a heretic is a good work and I want to share in it.” John Huss’s conscience said, “Give your body to be burned.” The woman’s conscience said, “Give the wood to burn him.” (Source Unknown)
