Swindoll - Washing The Family Car

One Saturday afternoon I said to my two children, “I’ll give you 75 cents to wash my car.” My younger son Chuck said, “Who in the world wants to wash a car for 75 cents?” So I turned to Colleen, our younger daughter and said, “Honey, I’ll give you $1.50 if you wash it.” She quickly started in on it and worked for an hour or so doing a terrific job. Then she called me out to see how clean it was and to pick up her pay check. Soon my son came along and told me he had encouraged his sister. If I had given him even a dime, that would have been a grace gift. For me to pay her $1.50 was a wage. She earned it. (Swindoll’s Ultimate Book of Illustrations, p. 251).
