Leadership

God’s blessing of Judah with leadership over the Israelites was contrary to natural order. It was pure grace for those tribes. These tribes of Judah settled east of the Jordan:

      1.   The sons of Reuben (vv. 1-10).

Reuben would have naturally been the son of Jacob through whom the greatest blessing would have come since he was the first born. However, because of his sin (v. 1), God passed over him and blessed Joseph with a double portion of the birthright.

      2.   The sons of Gad (vv. 11-22).

The Gadites extended themselves to the north and gradually occupying a large portion of the land originally allotted to the “half tribe.”

      3.   The Half-Tribe of Manasseh (vv. 23-26).

God’s certainly blessed Joseph with leadership and grace over the Israelite tribes. He did this by elevating Joseph’s two sons, Ephraim and Manasseh. God was not only faithful to bless as He had promised but He also judged sin as He said He would (vv. 25-26).
